Are you using all the tools available to you for making the best decisions while driving.  A lot of people forget to to use a simple but effective tool for safety, your rearview mirrors.  Hi, this is Don Alexander for the Mountain driver.  The biggest problem facing drivers of emergency vehicles, especially paramedics, is drivers ahead failing to yield.  This creates a dangerous, life threatening situation for all drivers and the public as well.  And the biggest cause of failing to yield - not looking in the rearview mirrors.
How often do you check your mirrors?  Every 10 seconds is a good rule of thumb, more often if traffic is heavy.  In the mountains, it is very important to use rearview mirrors.  I often encounter slow-moving traffic on the winding roads in our mountains.  Most people check their mirrors and use turnouts, but often - too often - I've seen people go for several miles and never look in their rearview mirrors.  They couldn't possible know if someone was following them, be it a line of traffic or an ambulance.  It's hard to take appropriate action when unaware.
Check your mirrors often, and watch out for those drivers who never use their mirrors.  Mirrors can give you important information, information you can use to make good, courteous decisions. This is Don Alexander for The Mountain Driver on KBHR 93.3 FM.
